CNC Machinist A
Role: CNC Machinist A
Purpose of Position
Responsible for programming CNC machines using CAM software, and for setting up and operating conventional, special-purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to manufacture metallic and non-metallic parts.
Tasks and Responsibilities
At the intermediate level, performs more varied and complex aspects of the position. Unusual issues are generally referred to supervision. This level requires considerable knowledge of products, subject matter, principles, and concepts of the position.
- Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpieces, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
- Reviews drawings and checks geometry using AutoCAD and SolidWorks software.
- Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or workpieces as guides for subsequent machining.
- Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.
- Calculates and sets machine controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, depth, and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control data.
- Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts controls as required; verifies conformance of finished workpieces to specifications.
- Sets up and operates machines or performs trial runs to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
- Verifies dimensions and alignment of assemblies.
- Installs machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and tests operation to ensure functionality and performance.
- Develops specifications from general descriptions and sketches parts or products to be machined.
- Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
Minimum Education
High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
Minimum Experience
- Minimum of four (4) years of related experience and/or training
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office
- Basic AutoCAD and SolidWorks skills, with the ability to verify drawing geometry
- Working knowledge of CNC CAM software
- Ability to operate CNC mills and CNC lathes
- Experience with manual mills, manual lathes, automated knee mills, and/or CNC lathes
- Ability to use horizontal cut-off saws and disc sanders as needed
- Ability to use precision measuring equipment applicable to the role
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
